Oud Zeer | Old Wounds portrays the family histories of people with roots in the former Dutch East Indies/Indonesia – (Indo-)Dutch, Moluccans, Chinese Indonesians (Peranakan), Indo-Africans, and Papuans – spanning from the first to the fourth generation. Stories of war, displacement, and a cold reception, but also of resilience, pride, and the passing on of heritage. This project highlights how this history, which affects two million people in the Netherlands, continues to resonate today and how new generations relate to a past that long remained unspoken.
With portraits by Andy Tan, assist Ellen van Bennekom, family collages by Zefanya Anindjola, assist Edith Paol, and stories recorded by Simone Berger-Straakenbroek, Styling: Richard Schreefel | Hair and make-up Mila de Jong en Sisley Angenois | Design Bureau Kelleman, Bart Scheurs, Martin Stoop, Manon Voet.
Oud Zeer | Old Wounds is an invitation to recognition and acknowledgment of a history that still echoes today.
